Pchelin studied first in Moscow at the College of Art, Sculpture and Architecture, to further study at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. He also entered the workshop of Repine. At the age of 23 he first received recognition as an artist when Tretiakov bought his picture New weds at a good farther.
Before the revolution of 1917 Pchelin participated at exhibitions organized by the Itinerants , later he directed his interest towards historical and revolutionary themes. In 1926 he received the honorary title of  Honored Artist of the Republic. Nevertheless, the works of Pchelin never fitted well into the canon of official soviet art.
